Just after the Colbert Report started last night, a Raccoon triggered a power outage that left 11,000 Ballard residences and businesses in the dark. According to spokesman, Mike Eagan, the Raccoon “bridged the wrong gap” at the Canal Substation. Due to the critter’s subsequent demise, no one will know for sure if it was trying to black out the Colbert broadcast, curtail Cinco de Mayo binge drinking, or if it was just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, the substation is clearly marked with “Danger - High Voltage” signs, so this reporter has a hard time believing that the racoon’s wrath was not an intentional act of marterism. The power was restored around 12:45am - dangerously close to when most Ballard bars had to make last call.
